Summary

Two Roman pottery vessels were ploughed up in 1948 and subsequent excavations unearthed fragments of Roman pottery and a strip of copper alloy, possibly from a Roman bucket. Metal-detecting between 1995 and 2016 recovered a Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint blade; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval to post-medieval jettons; post-medieval tokens and Roman to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include Roman brooches, a finger ring and enamelled seal box lid; an Early Saxon buckle; a Middle Saxon pin; a Middle Saxon/Late Saxon strap-end; a Late Saxon weight; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval/post-medieval coin weight, thimble, crotal bell, copper alloy vessel fragment, a copper alloy ring and an end cap from a scale-tang knife; post-medieval harness mounts, a rowel from a spur, part of a spoon, probable balance arm, furniture handle escutcheon and a furniture mount or escutcheon and undatable metalworking waste.

Full description

January 1948. Stray Find.
Two Roman pottery vessels brought to the surface by deep ploughing:
1. Large black store jar inverted, with a furrowed surface. Top was about 30cm (a foot) below the surface. See sketch (S8).
2. Grey carinated beaker (compare the Shadwell pots in British Museum). 1st century carinated beakers Camulodunum forms 120 etcetera and (S1), (S2), from about 50AD (Prehistoric Rhenish type).
Trial dig by R. R. Clarke (NCM) on 24 January 1948 produced many sherds and a fragment of strip bronze possibly from a bucket; repousse decorated bucket. (S3) (S4), (S5), photographs by Coe and Norfolk News Company.

Bronze medieval double-looped buckle with worn moulded decoration at each end. Lines of pellets, star and fleur-de-lis.
Bronze early post medieval double-looped buckle with lobes on both outer edges and at junction of bar with frame.
Bronze or lead/tin buckle, elongated D-shape with central bar; pin, probably iron, missing, early post medieval.
Bronze early post medieval lozengiform mount with two integral pins. Central cross formed of lobes, pelleted border in circle and four knops.
