Record Details

NHER Number:8603
Type of record:Building
Name:Upton Black Drainage Mill

Summary

This structure was originally built as a wind operated drainage mill. Today the black tarred red brick tower and the cap remain, along with the windshaft and fantail cradle. It is likely to date to around 1800, though from around 1950 it has been in use as a house. It was replaced by a later brick pump house which contained a steam engine, and in 1932 was converted to a Ruston and Hornsby diesel engine. In 1973 this in turn was replaced by an electric pump housed in a wooden outhouse.
