Record Details

NHER Number:7638
Type of record:Find Spot
Name:Multi-period finds including iron slag

Summary

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting at this site between 1958 and 1991 recovered a range of finds, including Mesolithic, Neolithic and undatable prehistoric worked flints; Roman, medieval, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman tiles; undatable lava quern fragments, iron slag and daub; Roman and medieval coins; post-medieval jettons and Roman to post-medieval and undatable metal-objects. The metal finds include a Roman cosmetic palette and terret; a medieval spur and purse frame; a medieval/post-medieval button; a post-medieval copper alloy vessel fragment and undatable copper alloy studs and lead weights.

This site is one of a number in the area to have produced iron slag (see also NHER 15448, NHER 7639, and NHER 7644). This debris is potentially associated with small-scale Roman industrial activity: a possible Roman kiln having been excavated approximately 400m south-west of this location.
