Summary

This stone monument was erected in 1897 to commemorate the discovery of approximately 100 human skeletons at this location in the same year. It consists of a square section surmounted by an urn, on a brick plinth. The human remains themselves are recorded under NHER 9976 (along with other archaeological evidence recorded at this site) and may have been associated with a medieval chapel.

Monument commemorating archaeological discoveries made at this site in 1897.
Previously recorded under NHER 9976 (which details the archaeological discoveries themselves).

June 1981. Listed, Grade II.
Listing Description excerpt:
"1897. A stone pedestal of square section surmounted by an urn, on a brick plinth. Inscribed 'AD 1897 In this Jubilee year of HM Queen Victoria about 100 skeletons were discovered on this hill together with some Roman pottery'. An oak tree has grown up beside the monument and its roots are toppling it over."
