Full description

April-May 2008. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site. Contexts 1-46.
This work revealed part of the Norman defensive ditch that surrounds the planned town of New Buckenham (NHER 41233). The ditch was found to be aligned NNW-SSE in this area. Partial excavation revealed a series of tips of material in the upper portion of the ditch, and medieval and post medieval artefacts were recovered from these deposits. The ditch was found to measure 10.7m wide at this location.
A trench located to the east of the ditch contained late post medieval features along with a single pit, possibly of medieval date. These features probably relate to small-scale cultivation.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
