Summary
19th century excavations here revealed the probably presence of a Roman cemetery. Finds included a plain jar, Castor Ware vase and bronze bracelets. Two coffins were found, one contained a female and had associated juvenile remains in a nearby cist while the other lead coffin was empty.

Full description
Stonehills Pit, east side of Woodlands Park, Dereham Road.
Probably late Roman burials, 3rd-4th century.
1853.
Plain jar 7.6cm (3in) high and 7.6cm (3in) diameter.
Held by NCM.
1861.
1.2m (4ft) down female skeleton in unsoldered lead coffin. 1.4m (56in) long: 35.6cm (14in) wide at head 33.0cm (13in) wide at foot, 25.4cm (10in) deep.
Jaw bones complete; teeth good; mortar like cement (?lime).
Remains of another skeleton and fragments of cemented cist near by two child's bronze bracelets.

Vase of Castor Ware 22.2cm (5.75in) high.

1899.
Lead coffin 1.5m (60in) long, 45.6cm (18in) maximum width, 30.5cm (12in) deep. Location now unknown.
