Name:Middle-Late Saxon settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

Metal-detecting between 2002 and 2013 recovered late prehistoric worked flint including Neolithic/Early Bronze Age oval primary flint scraper; Roman, Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery; medieval/post-medieval roof tile; Roman, Middle Saxon, medieval and post-medieval coins; post-medieval jettons and a token and Saxon, medieval, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include Roman brooches and a bracelet fragment; an Early Saxon cruciform brooch and a probable Early Saxon circular stud or mount; a Middle Saxon ansate brooch fragment; a Late Saxon stirrup-strap mount; a Saxon strap-end with animal-head terminal; a Saxon or post-medieval knife handle with a dragonesque animal-head; medieval dress accessories and a strap fitting; medieval/post-medieval dress fastener, vessel fragments and weights; post-medieval sword-belt fittings, buttons, a furniture fitting, rivet, cloth seal, harness mount and part of an elaborate spur and undated casting waste.
The quantity and type of Middle and Late Saxon finds recovered suggests that this is the site of a Middle to Late Saxon settlement.
