Summary

Metal-detecting in 1995 on the spoil heaps from the Scole Bypass/A140 improvement work carried out to the north of village recovered a large number of Roman objects and some medieval and post-medieval items. This included 139 Roman coins, many Roman metal finds, and three Roman sherds. Finds from other periods included a number of medieval and post-medieval coins, token and jettons, an Iron Age brooch, an Early Saxon brooch, and a Late Saxon Viking equal-armed brooch, as well as numerous medieval and post-medieval metal objects. Roman, Early Saxon and medieval pottery and a Roman tile fragment were recovered in 1995.

1995. Metal detecting.
On spoil of Scole By-pass/A140 improvement to north of village. [1]
139 Roman coins (on four sheets).
Medieval and post medieval coins, token and jettons (on three sheets).
Iron Age brooch.
Many Roman metal finds, and three Roman sherds.
Early Saxon brroch.
Late Saxon Viking equal-armed brooch (S1).
Medieval and post medieval metal finds.
Undated (?post-medieval) unidentified copper alloy decorative object with embossed silver snake's-head terminal (S2).

The Late Saxon brooch and the unidentified ?post-medieval object were both subsequently donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2000.78.2.1-2).
