Record Details

NHER Number:3980
Type of record:Monument
Name:Site of Roman bath house, metal working area and buildings and multi-period finds

Summary

This site has been subject to extensive investigations since the 1970s. Ploughing has uncovered the remains of a Roman bathhouse and other buildings, all of which were probably part of a small town. The presence of numerous Roman coins and metal objects also suggest that metalwork objects were being produced here. Between 1979 and 2013 metal detecting has also recovered Late Prehistoric lithic implements; Roman pottery; Iron Age, Roman and Late Saxon coins and Bronze Age to post-medieval metal objects. The metal objects include a Bronze Age awl; various Roman objects; several Early Saxon items (including a hanging bowl fragment); a Middle Saxon pin; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval/post-medieval pin and book mount and a post-medieval bell clapper and Jew's harp.
