Summary

Metal detecting at this location during 1998-99 recovered a variety of multi period metal objects. Amongst the many finds was an unusual medieval hollow cast bronze head with a rather sad expression and a three cornered hat. Perhaps this was some sort of religious figurine. The majority of finds were either coins or buckles and dated from the Roman to post medieval period.

Full description

August-September 1998. Metal detecting.
Hollow castbronze head, with the neck broken away (old break), (S1). The face is modelled entirely with a few engraved strokes, and looks rather sad. He has a schematic goatee beard, a short straight line for a mouth a rectangular nose, two wide slightly drooping oval eyes, and a three pointed hat.
Around the back of the head short vertical lines protrude from below the hat indicating hair.
From the wide oval eyes he must be Medieval - perhaps from a religious figurine. Drawn, see (S1).
