Name:Site of medieval moat and multi-period finds

Summary

A medieval moat, trackways and other features, including a possible structure, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Metal-detecting and field walking between 1989 and 2015 has recovered a Lower Palaeolithic handaxe; Iron Age to the post-medieval coins; Late Saxon to the post-medieval pottery sherds and Roman to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include a Roman lock pin, harness pendant and seal box lid; an Early Saxon wrist clasp; a Late Saxon stirrup-strap mount; medieval strap-ends; medieval/post-medieval buckles and a claw hammer head and a post-medieval lead alloy button.

31 January 1946, June 1974, July 1977, September 1978. RAF and NAU aerial photographs.
Trapezoidal ?moat and outworks as cropmarks. See (S1) and (S2).
First noted by R. R. Clarke (NAU) from RAF verticals, later photographed by D. A. Edwards (NAU).
Compilation of (S3), and cards by D. A. Edwards which had become confused with site NHER 3603.

Lead pot mend with GGG sherd.

Beautiful purse bar/swivel with niello inlay.
Copper alloy buckle plate, circular 'rosette' stamp in centre, 2 rivets.
Post medieval double looped buckle.
Rumbler bell with WG.
Copper alloy skillet leg.
Lead 'domed' object.
Lead 'bullet' shaped object.
Large strong copper alloy sheet with 4 rivet holes (much scratched in several directions).
All (S4) except pottery.

Strap end buckle with hooked terminal, copper alloy pin, square terminal, pierced hole for rivet, faint rocker arm decoration, projecting hook. Oval frame 14th century.
Nice shaped lug from cauldron, fragment of. Medieval, copper alloy.
13th century belt stiffener, copper alloy. Half round barrel, decorated with rows of square pellets and a lobe at each end; each with attachment shank on reverse.
Medieval 14th century lovely buckle, elaborate, with projecting convex lobes forming outer frame, with 2 bars between lobes. Forms a kind of trefoil. Rest of frame on each side of pin is also moulded and foliate. Pin looped over bar. Photographed.

1 Late Saxon buckle frame and 1 stirrup strap mount (S6).
1 medieval coin, 1 pottery sherd (glazed Grimston), 6 buckles, 3 strap-ends, 1 strap loop and 1 furniture fitting.
2 medieval/post-medieval buckles, 1 thimble, 2 copper alloy cooking vessel fragments and 1 lead weight.
2 post-medieval coins, 2 buckles, 1 lead alloy button, 2 harness mounts and 3 lead cloth seals.
