Record Details

NHER Number:33592
Type of record:Monument
Name:Roman settlement site and multi-period metal objects

Summary

Extensive metal-detecting and fieldwalking here during the period 1998-2006 has recovered a huge wealth of metal objects, coins and pottery sherds. The large quantities of Roman pottery fragments indicated that this was a settlement site during this period. Noteworthy finds from here included an Iron Age terret, Early Saxon hanging bowl escutcheon, a post-medieval coin weight, part of medieval macehead and Papal bulla, Mesolithic/Neolithic worked flints and a Roman bird figurine. Metal-detecting in 2011 recovered Roman and medieval coins, Roman pottery, a Roman toilet spoon, knife or key terminal and knife end-cap and a medieval belt mount.
