Name:Roman finds and features, West Newton Farm

Summary

Walling, flooring and a path of rammed flints, probably part of a Roman villa, were found in 1955 during drain digging works. Also found was an almost complete Roman pottery jug. A Roman coin, quern, tiles, slag, a whetstone and pottery fragments were recovered during building works in 1989.

Full description

June 1955. Stray Find.
Found in yard of West Newton Farm, while digging drains:
Walling and flooring at 2 feet [60cm] depth, also path of rammed flints (probably part of a villa).
Almost complete Roman jar in grey ware, 3 4/5 inches [9.6cm] high, 2 4/5 inches [7cm] in diameter.
Donated to the York Cottage Estate Museum.
Information from (S1), which has a sketch of the pottery jar on its reverse.
These discoveries were reported in (S2).

Finds from building site, in area of 'a lot of burnt soil':
Roman coin of Commodus (PP).
Other finds recovered were donated to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1998.365.1) including:
1 Iron Age or Early Saxon pottery sherd (identified by A. Rogerson, NAU).
Roman pottery sherds.
Quern fragments, tiles, slag and whetstone.
Bone (animal) also present but not collected.
