Summary

Metal-detecting between 1995 and 2017 recovered Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval jettons and a post-medieval token; a Roman coin blank; and Roman, Early Saxon and Late Saxon to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include a Roman bracelet fragment; a magnificent Early Saxon square-headed brooch; a Late Saxon spindle whorl and stirrup; a medieval seal matrix, incomplete belt mount and a buckle; medieval/post-medieval buttons, a headdress pin and belt mount and a post-medieval lead weight and book clasp.

Full description

August-September 1995. Metal detecting.
Magnificent bronze small square-headed brooch in excellent condition. H-shaped lug and neat catch plate on reverse. Traces of iron pin in lug. Leeds Type A3 (?). Polaroid (S1) NCM. Linear grooved border on head plate; central chip-carved rectangular panel, with two square fields in centre, each enclosing a chip-carved 'rounded' swastika.
Ribbed bow (central rib, side 'grooves' gilded). Bird's head lappets flank foot at top, and annulets. Lozengiform chip-carved field with central quatrefoil. Rectangular side lobes and wedge-shaped terminal with traces of plating.
