Type of record:Monument
Name:Site of medieval settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

Fieldwalking in 1993 and metal-detecting between 2011 and 2016 recovered late prehistoric worked flints, including a Neolithic part polished axehead fragment; late prehistoric, Iron Age to Roman, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval to medieval/post-medieval whetstones and Early Saxon, Late Saxon and medieval to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include an Early Saxon brooch; a Late Saxon bell; Late Saxon to post-medieval spindle whorl; a medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval thimbles, a harness pendant, cloth seal, pendent bell and pendent frame from a purse; medieval/post-medieval copper alloy vessel fragments and a lead weight and post-medieval crotal bells, a bell fragment, spur fragment, harness mount and unidentified objects.
The concentration of medieval pottery found suggests that this was the site of a medieval settlement, one of a number of such sites strung out along the edge of a former green.
