Record Details

NHER Number:30539
Type of record:Monument
Name:Site of Roman and medieval settlement and multi-period finds from Davis Field

Summary

Prehistoric flints, fragments of pottery dating from the Iron Age to the post medieval periods, a Roman coin and a medieval copper alloy vessel have been found during fieldwalking. The large amount of Roman pottery recovered from this site is suggestive of settlement activity over a long period of time. This was also the site of a medieval settlement which was located close to a path leading from a green to St Peter's Church.
Metal detecting between 2010 and 2011 recovered a late Prehistoric flint scraper and flake; Iron Age, Roman and post-medieval coins; pottery dating from the Romano-British to post-medieval periods and various Romano-British, Late Saxon, medieval, post-medieval and undated metal objects. These objects include an Iron Age harness pendant; Romano Dolphin brooches, spoon-probe, bell, seal box, plate brooch, bracelet, and a strap-slide from a military belt; medieval leash, weight, strap-end, buckles, horseshoe, bell and harness fitting; medieval/post-medieval candlestick fragments; post-medieval tap, weight, cloth seal, chape, dress accessories and crotal bell and an unusually elaborate undated casting jet.

(S1) notes that the concentration of Roman material recovered from this site suggests activity over a long period of time. Scattered Roman finds recovered from the southern part of this site appear to be an 'aura' from the main concentration. (S1) also notes that this is the site of a possible medieval settlement that is close to a footpath linking the former green to St Peter's Church.
