Record Details

NHER Number:29937
Type of record:Monument
Name:Middle to Late Saxon settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

Metal-detecting between 1993 and 2016 recovered late prehistoric worked flints, including a Neolithic blade and Neolithic to Bronze Age scrapers; Iron Age to post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman brick and tile fragments; a fragment of lava quern stone; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval to post-medieval tokens and Middle Bronze Age to post-medieval and undatable metal objects. The metal finds include undatable metalworking debris; a Middle/Late Bronze Age casting jet; a Roman brooch, stud or nail, and furniture fitting; Early Saxon brooches, a die stamp and a patrix; a Middle Saxon brooch and pin; Middle/Late Saxon strap-end, a brooch and a unidentified object; a Middle Saxon/medieval brooch; Late Saxon brooches, a strap-end, furniture fitting and bridle side-link from horse harness; a Late Saxon/medieval harness fitting; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; Late Saxon to post-medieval spindle whorls; a medieval key, spindle whorl, weights and a harness mount and pendants; a medieval/post-medieval candlestick, copper alloy vessel, cauldron fragments and lead weights and a post-medieval cloth seal, crotal bell, weight and spur fragment.
The Middle to Late Saxon pottery and metal objects recovered, which were concentrated in the north-eastern part of the site, suggests that there was a small settlement in this area from the Middle Saxon period, with more intense activity in the Late Saxon period. Excavations in the southwest of the field in 2002 and 2011 did not record any archaeological features, indicating that any activity was focused in the northern portion of the field.
