Name:Multi-period finds and possible Early Saxon inhumation cemetery

Summary

Metal-detecting between 1991 and 2013 recovered post-medieval pottery; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins and Iron Age to post-medieval and undatable metal objects. The metal finds include an Iron Age terret; fragments of Early Saxon brooches, buckles, pendants, a girdle hanger and a sleeve clasp; a Middle Saxon pin; Late Saxon brooch; medieval buckles, harness fittings, a harness pendant and a casket key; post-medieval dress accessories, harness fittings, a crotal bell and other metalwork and undatable metalworking debris. The Early Saxon finds from this site suggest an Early Saxon inhumation cemetery in the area.

18 August 1991. Metal detecting finds east of [1].
Casting jet, copper alloy, unknown date.
17th century openwork button.
Medieval D shaped buckle.
15th/16th century belt mount, openwork quatrefoil spikes on reverse.
16th century circular bronze buckle, scalloped edge.
Identified S. Margeson (NCM) 19 August 1991.

Early Saxon gold pendant, loop missing and cross in centre missing, made of four concentric bands of beaded wire.
Denarius forgery of Augustus, 13 BC.

?Late Saxon ?disc brooch fragment with central lug and copper alloy wire pin.
Iron Age terret.
Three medieval copper alloy vessel legs.
Vessel body fragment.
Lead die, uneven, 6/4, 5/4, 2/4 and some asymmetric.
Medieval gilded copper alloy harness pendant, open lozenge, with hanging small lozenge within frame and ribbed frames.
Medieval base of fastener with animal head terminal.

British Museum (Medieval and Later Antiquities) suggested this was medieval (NCM does not agree).
