Summary

A Roman settlement overlain by an Early Saxon inhumation cemetery. This exceptional site has been investigated since 1991 and a huge array of finds have been recovered, most of Roman and Saxon date. The diversity of finds here is quite staggering and includes domestic, manufacturing, religious and ornamental objects as well as numerous coins. Metal-detecting between 2009 and 2016 recovered an Early Bronze Age flint axehead and further Late Iron Age, Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; a post-medieval jettonsand tokens and Iron Age to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include a Middle Iron Age brooch; a Late Iron Age or Roman harness mount; Iron Age/Roman brooches; Roman brooches, finger rings, bracelet fragments, furniture fittings, a lock-pin, prick spur, nail cleaner and military harness or strap mount; Roman/Early Saxon military disc-attachment belt fitting; an Early Saxon brooch, girdle hanger and wrist clasp; an Early Saxon/Middle Saxon mount; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval brooch, candleholder, harness mount, harness pendant, thimble, pilgrim badge, spindle whorl, pendent loop from a purse frame, scabbard chape and suspension unit or holder for a lamp or censer and post-medieval dividers, musket balls and a sword belt mount.

Pre 1991. Site detected by member of the public [1] for 3-4 years.
No finds reported.

November 1991. Fieldwalking by [2] under young cereal crop.
Roman material evident over whole area, with at least two patches of building materials, large flints, roof tiles, pottery, oyster shells and animal bone.
