Name:Site of Iron Age and Roman settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

This is the site of a Roman settlement, and fieldwalking and metal detecting have recovered Roman pottery, coins and a spoon handle in the shape of a heron. Iron Age pottery has also been found on the site, suggesting that there may have been a settlement here during the Iron Age. An Early Saxon belt plate, and medieval and post medieval coins, pottery and metal finds including medieval horse harness pendants have also been found.

1984 to 1985. Fieldwalking, Hales site 128. Fieldwalking.
12 worked flints.
1 sherd Iron Age flint gritted and 4 possibles.
Antoninianus of Carausius PAX AVG S/P/ML London mint AD 287 to 293.
14 Roman greyware.
2 medieval unglazed.
1 medieval glazed.
1 glazed red earthenware.
1 post medieval stoneware.

Romano-British vessel/spoon handle in the form of a heron’s head and neck, found in 1996, was re-identified as a post-medieval furniture fitting, cf. a complete and almost identical example with inserted iron fixing from Postwick (HER 30401) and another fragmentary piece from Horning (HER 8446).
