Summary

Metal-detecting between 1990 and 2013 recovered Roman, Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery; pieces of medieval brick; an undated fragment of quern; Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval coins and Roman, Saxon and medieval to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include a Roman brooch and bracelet fragment; an Early Saxon brooch; a Middle/Late Saxon pin; Late Saxon strap-ends and part of a box; medieval dress accessories, strap fittings, part of a cauldron, a harness mount, nail, weight and copper alloy vessel fragments and a medieval/post-medieval buckle and lead weight.

October 1963. [1].
Informant [1] found many medieval sherds in this field (called Field I) and dug a hole 22cm (9") diameter, 45cm (18") deep to find 15 to 20 more. Another excavation called 'Field I Site I' 18m from a tree on the north boundary of field then 5m to east, produced many more sherds and brick fragments like those in kilns on site NHER 11789.

Informant [2] found Roman coarse ware, Saxo-Norman ware, medieval sherds including Grimston Ware and post medieval sherds, also a quern stone fragment, in fieldwalking.

Scatter of Roman coarse ware and samian; coarse ware seems to be predominantly 4th century.

1990. Metal detecting.
Medieval gilt copper alloy bar with H shape lug for pendant; rivet holes in lobed terminal at each end of bar.
Fragment of medieval tongue shaped strap end, made of three plates.
Medieval cast copper alloy cauldron foot, quite finely made, facetted edges.
Medieval copper alloy belt stiffener with rivet at each end and central boss, 13th century.

Small long brooch imitating radiate headed brooch, lower part of foot and pin missing. Semi-circular head has four vestigial knob substituting projections. Border of head and foot outlined by punched dots. Single pin and catch plate on rear. Break not recent.
