Name:Cropmarks of linear features along with multi period finds, Wallington Park

Summary

Aerial photography in 1977 recorded a series of linear cropmarks here. Subsequent excavations discovered a pit filled with multi period pottery sherds, prehistoric flint flakes and an Iron Age loomweight and spindle whorl.

Full description

1977-8. In field in Wallington Park near a rectangular cropmark. Topsoil removed from three areas, but only one produced finds. Much disturbed by deep ploughing.
Elongated shallow pit produced group of Iron Age pottery, loom weight and spindle whorl?

In soil above coarse gritted Early Saxon wares including part of cup-lugged bowl and stamped sherd.
Late Neolithic-Early Bronze Age button scraper and flakes also found.
Excavation report in (S1).
Also a single course of large flints, slightly curved, embedded in coarse reddish soil at base of ploughsoil with some Iron Age sherds.

The Iron Age sherds are coarseware including perforated lug (possibly vertical) scored jars. The 'PS cup lugged bowl' is not; it is a wide mouthed vessel with vertical perforated lug, possibly Early Saxon but equally possibly Iron Age.
