Name:	Bronze Age barrow earthwork on Broome Heath

Summary

The earthwork of a Bronze Age round barrow. One of a group, the remainder of which are in the neighbouring parish of Broome. The remains as they stand today are 30m in diameter and about 2m high. Mesolithic/Neolithic worked flints and Neolithic pottery fragments have been recovered from the surface of the barrow, evidence of earlier activity that had presumably been cast up onto the mound when it was being constructed.

Full description

Barrow, part of group of which remainder in Broome Parish. (See also NHER 10597 and 10624).
55m (180ft) west of long barrow and 37m (122ft) from centre of tail of long barrow. 33m (108ft) diameter, 1.5m (5ft) high.
Flat top. Contains many rabbit burrows. Has been trenched, probably in 1858.

1966. Holes had been dug in barrow by local children.
Flints found on surface.

Found in rabbit scrapes on surface of barrow during Prehistoric Society outing:
1 prehistoric burnt flint fragment.
3 Mesolithic/Neolithic flint blades and 1 flake.

An earthwork of a Bronze Age round barrow is visible on aerial photographs (S8-S17). The central grid reference for this earthwork has been amended from TM 3439 9132 to TM 3441 9130. A circular earthwork mound with a diameter of 31m is present. It is likely that this is a large round barrow of Bronze Age date. It is located on Broome Heath and lies 25m to the west of a Neolithic long barrow (NHER 10597). Another Bronze Age round barrow survives to the south (NHER 10624), with further barrows having been destroyed by quarrying (NHER 10623, 10632). This group of barrows on the heath are located at approximately 5m OD on a gravel terrace of the River Waveney. It is surrounded by earthworks of World War Two weapons pits related to training activity on the heath (NHER 43776). Quarrying had encroached close to the northern side of this earthwork by 1967 (S17). This round barrow is protected as a scheduled ancient monument (S6). See also earthwork survey (S18).
