Record Details

NHER Number:1021
Type of record:Monument
Name:Possible Roman cemetery or occupation site and multi-period finds

Summary

This site has been subject to investigation for over one hundred years, with activity including systematic fieldwalking surveys and non-systematic metal-detecting. The large number of Roman pottery sherds found provoked an initial belief that this is the site of a Roman cremation cemetery. The large number of finds of all types, including hundreds of Roman coins, certainly indicate activity on this site from the early prehistoric to the medieval period when the nearby village and church became deserted. There is clear evidence for activity on the site during the Mesolithic, with a number of diagnostic worked flints of this date having been found and a number of pieces can be ascribed a broad Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date.

Full description

1895.
J.J. Coulton describes a rude cinerary containing human bones and believed to be a Roman burial ground located a short distance from the ruins of St Mary's Church (NHER 2619).
Information from (Sd).
H. Hamilton (HES), 06 March 2013.

1901 to 1907. Casual finds.
Human bones and hundreds of pot sherds (comprising 65 vessels) were collected from a 4 acre site in earthworks (near NHER 2619) and from the slopes to the stream on the southwest side. Also a small stone spindle whorl and four flint pieces (possibly Neolithic).
Information from (Sa) and (Sb).
R.R. Clarke (NCM).

1921. Casual find north-west of St Mary's Church (NHER 2619).
Pot sherds and oyster shells.
R.R. Clarke (NCM).

1931-1932. Casual finds to the south-east of St Mary's Church (NHER 2619).
See NHER 2621 for details.
H. Hamilton (HES), 30 January 2013.

1960. Casual Finds
North-east of the site of St Mary's Church (NHER 2619): Roman sherds including fragment of burnt Samian and mortarium.
North, south and west of Caldecote Farm: surface scatter of medieval sherds from site of deserted medieval village (NHER 2634).
South and west of Caldecote Farm: surface scatter of undecorated black ware, probably Early Saxon.
Finds in NCM (410.960 and 411.960).
R.R. Clarke (NCM).

1968 to 1969. Fieldwalking at Caldecote Farm.
Two concentrations of Prehistoric pottery (primarily Iron Age) pottery were identified: a dense scatter on the north and east sides of the site of St Mary's Church (NHER 2619), and a more dispersed concentration along the sandy rise overlooking the river to the west of the deserted medieval village (NHER 2634).
A general scatter of flint and second century pottery was observed over the entire site, but not in sufficient quantity to indicate a settlement in the immediate area. However, occupation definitely ceased in the second century and no pottery dated between the third and eighth centuries was recovered. The sherds found in 1960 described as Early Saxon are likely Iron Age.
A small quantity of Middle Saxon sherds were recorded in the vicinity of the farm buildings. The first village may have been located just to the south of the church.
Tenth and Eleventh century pottery was recovered from the east and south of the church, and the settlement appears to have expanded further to the west in the 12th century. The medieval pottery collected indicates that the village (NHER 2634) was deserted in the 15th century.
See (Sc) for further details.
H. Hamilton (HES), 30 January 2013.

1984.
Prehistoric sherds found.

1984-1986. Fieldwork carried out by R. J. Silvester, (NAU).
Mesolithic activity was represented by a small number of diagnostic worked flints, including microliths, microburins and an axe sharpening flake. It is also likely that at least a proportion of the blades recovered were of Mesolithic and/or Early Neolithic date. This suggestion would seem to be supported by the fact that the main blade concentrations occurred in the areas where the most Mesolithic flints had been recovered.
Finds include a Beaker wrist guard (S124).
