Full description

The Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (CUMAA) holds several Palaeolithic objects from unlocated gravel pits at Old Buckenham. These are listed in (S1) as 1 handaxe, 1 retouched flake/flake implement and 1 unretouched flake. Information from (S2).

The handaxe was found in 1907 and had been donated by the Cambridge Antiquarian Society (Z 29366). According to (S3) it is a flat slightly rolled ovate marked "Old Buckenham". The other objects listed by Roe were collected by Rev. W. Gray and are recorded as being from "Buckenham Gravel Pit" (1924.1012). A handaxe is also noted under this accession number but the single handaxe listed by Roe (S2) is almost certainly the 1907 discovery.
These finds are also noted in (S4), (S5) and (S6), although little additonal information is given.

The location of these discoveries is unclear, particularly as they are not necessarily all from the same site. The 1st Edition OS map marks a number of open gravel pits in the parish, including one at TM 051 907 and a group of three in the vicinity of TG 063 905.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 8 April 2013.
