Full description

The Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (CUMAA) holds several Palaeolithic objects from unlocated gravel pits at Old Buckenham (S1). These are listed in (S2) and include:
1 handaxe (Z 29366). Found 1907. Ex Cambridge Antiquarian Society.
1 retouched flake/flake implement and 1 unretouched flake (1924.1012). Buckenham Gravel Pit. Collected by Rev. W. Gray. A handaxe is also noted under this accession number but the single handaxe listed by Roe (S2) is probably the 1907 find.
These finds are noted in (S3), (S4) and (S5), although little additonal information is given.

The location of these discoveries is unclear, particularly as they are not necessarily all from the same site. The 1st Edition OS map marks a number of open gravel pits in the parish, including one at TM 051 907 and a group of three in the vicinity of TG 063 905.
These objects are also listed by (S2) and (S3), although no additional details are recorded. The information recorded in (S4) and (S5) is also derived solely from Roe's gazeteer (S1), suggesting that these finds were never reported in a published source.
T. Clough (NCM). Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 8 April 2013.
