In 1989 a watching brief undertaken along Charlton Road and Whitefriars during excavations for Anglian Water noted a redeposited block of masonry from the city wall, as well as a possible 10th century defensive ditch and a number of floor surfaces of timber and chalk, with oak piles and brushwood consolidation visible above the peat line.

Monitoring of excavation of drainage trench along Charlton Road and Whitefriars (around 340m). Depth varied from 1.3m - 4.5m+
Major observation: redeposited block of masonry from city wall.
Deep feature (possibly 10th century defensive ditch?).
Floor/working surfaces of timber and chalk, oak piles and brushwood consolidation above peat.

The finds recovered have been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1999.305).
