Full description

September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of an incomplete rectilinear enclosure and ditches of probable Roman date are visible on aerial photographs (S1) to (S3). These cropmarks are centred on TG 4757 1300 and lie on a roughly southwest to northeast axis. An incomplete rectilinear enclosure or field is present at TG 4768 1311 (S1). Only three sides of this enclosure are visible as cropmarks. It measures 83m by at least 43m with a possible entrance located centrally on its northeast side. Ditches on a parallel alignment to this enclosure are present to its northwest and southwest (S1) and (S2). In the south of the group around TG 4753 1290, two parallel ditch cropmarks are present on a curving northwest to southeast alignment (S3). These form a junction with a southwest to northeast aligned double ditch at their southeast end. It is likely that they define an incomplete sub-rectangular field measuring at least 180m by 57m. The alignment of this field appears to match that of a possible Iron Age to Roman enclosure located 50m to its northwest (NHER 27689). The enclosure and ditch cropmarks in this group are likely to be of Roman date. Pottery and coins of that period have previously been found in the vicinity of these cropmarks (NHER 16336).
