Full description

April 2004. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of part of a northwest to southeast aligned coaxial field system of probable Roman date are visible on aerial photographs (S1). The cropmarks are incomplete but two fields centred on TG38902622 and TG39072620 are relatively well defined. The westernmost of these measures 190m x 95m. Both of these fields appear to have a ditched internal division at their northwest end. An intermittent trackway along the northeast side of this field system appears to divert to respect the position of a round barrow ring ditch (NHER 8221) at TG39122626. This trackway continues to the southeast of the modern road where it turns again. Further ditches and trackways probably related to this field system are present to the south (NHER 38574), north (NHER 38541 and 38545) and west (NHER 38530 and 38546). A north to south aligned trackway of probable Roman date (NHER 38575) crosses this field system at a diagonal suggesting that the landscape was extensively replanned during this period. Four undated ditch cropmarks which do not appear to relate to the field system are located around TG38872614.
