Summary

Investigations of this site during 1986-2005 recovered a variety of objects. Finds included prehistoric flint flakes and a group of burnt flints, a Late Saxon strap end, a medieval key and a post medieval bell. Sherds of Iron Age, Roman, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval and post medieval pottery have also been found on site.

Two World War Two spigot bases previously recorded under this record are now recorded under NHER 64031. A burnt mound previously recorded under this record is now recorded under NHER 64032. E. McDonald (HES), 20 February 2020.

1986 to 1987. Location [1]. Well defined area in centre of field, pot concentration.
Thirty-eight Thetford type ware sherds.
Ninety medieval unglazed sherds.
Twenty-nine glazed Grimston ware sherds.
One possible Dutch late medieval glazed sherd.
Three Late medieval transitional sherds.
Twenty-three post medieval mostly glazed red earthenware sherd.
Iron key medieval, (S1) type VIIA kidney shaped bow, 136mm long.

April 1993. Metal-detecting. [3].
Late Saxon openwork strap end fragment with two rivet holes in solid end with traces of iron. Diagonal ribbing across top and milled edges. Openwork decoration below and punched annulets on relief animal in centre. ?Unfinished hole between two rivet holes. To be photographed.

One handle Grimston Thetford ware (or unglazed Grimston) (weight 44g).
Two medieval unglazed sherds.

November/December 1996. Fieldwalking, casual finds.
Five fragments of lava quern (four with tooling marks on one face). Found in two areas, in A1 and B1, and in C2 to C4.
Very large late medieval/early post medieval three piece bronze crotal bell. Sphere of two pieces, lower with two apertures, joined by a slit suspension loop of folded strip.
Remains of iron pea. Height (excluding loop) 33mm. Diameter 39mm. Found in C1.
