Name:Site of Iron Age, Early Saxon and medieval settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

This is the site of an Iron Age, Early Saxon and medieval settlement. Prehistoric flints, Roman tile and fragments of pottery dating from the late prehistoric to the post medieval periods have been found by fieldwalking. A medieval finger ring has been found by metal detecting.

18 December 1986. Sites BB 387 to 401, Contexts 2 to 16. Fieldwalking, good conditions.
Iron Age sherds; Early Saxon sherds including concentration of Iron Age/Early Saxon.
Flints.
Roman sherds and tile, including Samian.
Medieval sherds including Grimston.
Late Saxon sherds Thetford and St Neots.
Middle Saxon Ipswich ware.
Post medieval sherds including Rearen.
Prehistoric sherds.

Ref (S1) states that a complete rectangular moat is depicted here on an 18th century map in NRO. It is not manorial and its origin is unknown.
