Name:Site of Bronze Age ring ditch and Roman settlement and Roman marching camp

Summary

This is the site of a ring ditch, probably dating to the Bronze Age, and a Roman marching camp, which also extends into site NHER 20130, which are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. This is also the site of a Roman settlement. Prehistoric flints and fragments of pottery dating from the late prehistoric to the post medieval periods have been found by fieldwalking.

3 December 1986 and 2 February 1987.
Sites BB 334 to 341 and 449 to 50, contexts 2 to 11.
Excludes sites NHER 20128 and NHER 20129 not rewalked.
Fieldwalking good conditions, winter cereal.
Worked flints.
Prehistoric sherds.
Roman sherds including oxidised, colourcoated, shelly.
Late Saxon sherds - Thetford.
Medieval sherds including Late medieval/Trans and Grimston.
Medieval roof tile; copper alloy cauldron rim-handle.
Ipswich ware Middle Saxon.
Post medieval sherds.
