Name:Possible medieval moat and multi-period finds

Summary

A possible medieval moat is visible on Ordnance Survey maps. Fieldwalking and metal-detecting between 2002 and 2013 recovered a Neolithic scraper; medieval to post-medieval pottery sherds; a medieval quern fragment; post-medieval clay tobacco pipe fragments; medieval and post-medieval coins; a post-medieval jetton and undated, Roman and medieval to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include an undated weight; a Roman military sword belt fitting; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval brooch and post-medieval spur fragments, a furniture fitting, thimble, harness mount and weight.

Full description

November 1986. Southwest of Hargate.
Possible moat marked on (S1). West and south sides shown water filled but narrow, pond to east of small building possibly once part of east side. Now all removed so not possible to identify.
Fieldwalking produced finger tipped decorated handle and medieval rim sherd.
