Summary

Fieldwalking recovered fragments of Roman, Late Saxon, medieval and post medieval pottery. A very restricted range of medieval pottery dating to the late 12th and 13th century was recorded. The concentration of Late Saxon and medieval finds suggests this may have been a Late Saxon to medieval settlement.

Full description

December 1985 and February to March 1986. Hales Survey, Heckingham site 19.
Market garden crop remains.

Seventy six sherds early medieval to medieval unglazed.
One medieval glazed, normal coarse ware with internal glaze.
One glazed red earthenware.
One base grey sandy Roman or Thetford type.

A very restricted range of material suggesting date late 12th to 13th century on revisit.
Two medieval unglazed.

Site 19.
This area has been interpreted as a Late Saxon to early medieval settlement. One possible Thetford type (or Roman?), subnstantial proportion of early medieval amongst medieval sherds.
