Summary

Many prehistoric worked flints including a Beaker period barbed and tanged arrowhead have been found on this field. Metal detecting has recovered other finds including a Late Roman buckle, a Late Saxon coin, a 13th century seal matrix, a medieval pewter lid and a beautiful decorated 15th century purse bar depicting outward facing animal heads.

Full description

Pre Summer 1986. Found over 14 acre field.
Eighty six crude flakes, Neolithic and later.
Two small flakes.
One barbed and tanged Beaker arrowhead.
Eight scrapers and core small core Neolithic or later.

Medieval lid, pewter, octagonal with domed centre and acorn-shaped terminal/handle.
Late Roman 'soldiers and settlers' type openwork buckle. 4th-5th century. See (S1).

13th century lead pointed oval seal matrix, fleur-de-lis in centre. S'CRIS[. Large, length around 53mm and battered/worn.
Medieval oval-looped buckle with integral forked spacer plate. Wire pin. Outer sheets missing.

Beautiful 15th century purse bar decorated with lattice work of pairs of lines inlaid with niello. Central boss for swivel, flanked on each side by outward facing animal heads, the 'bar' projecting from their open jaws. Integral loops for purse fabric on flanges projecting from base of bar.
