Name:15th century barn and post medieval tannery

Summary

This large 15th century brick and flint barn has various post medieval elements. South of the barn is a pond, a dammed stream, a culvert, a flint lined well and walls from two ruined flint buildings. These features are probably the remains of a post medieval tannery. Animal bones, medieval and post medieval pottery sherds and undated millstones have been collected from this site.

Full description

In grounds of modern hosue called 'Saxfield'.
Large tithe? barn of 15th century date, now two buildings. South of the barn is a pond, a culvert, a dammed stream (a modern dam, with a wooden predecessor) and walls from two ruined flint buildings; remains of tannery? Map from 1880 (S1) suggest buildings disused by 1880; perhaps used about 1780 to 1880.
Grimston ware, medieval wares, lead glazed sherds found.
