Summary

A brick and flint building, dating to about 1600, which has now been divided into two cottages. The building contains reused medieval stonework, perhaps taken from St Mary's Priory, NHER 3632. The building was used as a workhouse in the late 18th century.

Full description

North wall of flint on lower storey, with several hoodmoulded windows all narrowed or part blocked.
West gable has similar windows on two storeys, the upper one recut then blocked again.
Upper storey north is of brick.
16th or early 17th century, presumably used as a workhouse at some time?
Now two cottages.

(S1) notes as: also known as 21 to 22 East Rudham, or as Faize Cottages.
Central straight join visible on south.
Possibly originally through passage plan with stack to southwest.
Confirms dating to about 1600.

September 2005.
Detailed examination suggests (S1) is correct as to date but wrong in its interpretation.
Building contains much reused stone.
It may once have had another wing.
Interior of about 1600 on first floor but ground floor altered when it became a parish workhouse in late 18th century, then many other alterations when it became tenements in 19th century.
Many constructional features as yet unexplained.
