Name:Late Saxon brooches and multi-period pottery sherds

Summary

In 1970 sherds of Late Saxon and medieval pottery were recovered from here. Part of a medieval/post medieval spoon was found on site in 1985. Metal detecting in this area during 1996 and 1998 retrieved some fine pieces of metalwork including two 10th century disc brooches decorated in the Borre style and a Roman hook.

Full description

1970. Edge of field immediately north of north bank of churchyard.
Early 12th century Thetford ware cooking pot rim sherds and rim sherd of storage jar or pitcher 12th century - black and sandy see for comparison Kusbead (possible not clear) and other early medieval sherds. One black glass 17th century.

10th century convex disc brooch decorated in Borre style, with pin lug and catchplate on reverse Anglo-Scandinavian, (S1).

Possible Roman hook made of round-section bronze wire.
Head is flattened to a sub-rectangular plate and pierced. Presumably for suspension.
