Name:Roman pottery kilns, Wymondham College

Summary

Two Roman pottery kilns were discovered and excavated in 1958 during construction work at the college. The kilns were mainly producing handled flagons from about AD75 to AD100. A third kiln was excavated in 1962 by the students of the college, and more Roman pottery and kiln waste was recovered.

3 June 1958.
Trench revealed Roman pottery and traces of 2 kilns.
Manufacture of handled flagons at Wymondham College.

Investigated 5 June 1958.
Samian F35/36.

July 14th to 17th 1958.
2 kilns excavated and 3rd revealed by NCM. Operating AD 75 to 100.
Chief product handled flagons in buff-pink ware.
Excavated by D.R. Howlett for NCM.

Excavations of pottery kiln III by R.A. Bawden and boys of Wymondham College.
Produced buff-ware flagons, bowls, 1 fragment of mortarium; clay furniture from kiln.
