Name:Post medieval brick kiln/brick works and multi period finds

Summary

Prior to 1911 a number of Neolithic flint tools, Iron Age pottery sherds and Bronze Age sword were recovered from here. A map of 1836 shows that a Suffolk style brick kiln was sited here along with a coal store and building erected in 1828. Although the kiln is no longer evident the other two structures do survive.

Full description

Brickyard. Finds from yard - pre 1911. Found in pocket of dark coloured earth.
Neolithic small flint axe, chipped knife, part-polished axe fragment, scraper, unworked flakes and chips.

Held in 1947 and before by S. S. George Collection.
Three Iron Age sherds including one of Corky Ware [1] and medieval sherds.
Red deer antler with cuts - found in claypit (Not in NCM?). See (S2)
Fragment of leaf-shaped bronze sword 'near brickyard' (Not NCM?).

Brickyard itself now disused.

Marked on 1836 1in Ordnance Survey. Suffolk type kiln with firing chamber floor level with grates (very unusual, like South Cove, Suffolk). Coal store remains and a building dated 1828.
