Summary

Excavations in 1987 and 1988 revealed fragments of Roman pottery, Late Saxon Christian burials that pre-dated the Norman cathedral, a medieval D-shaped flint and mortar structure and mason's work area, large quantities of post medieval brick and tile and a soakaway fed by storm drains running from the cathedral.

Full description

October-December 1987 and April-June 1988. Excavation.
Roman. Residual sherds
Late Saxon. Christian burials aligned east-west and predating the Norman cathedral.
Scatter of Late Saxon pottery (Thetford-type Ware).
Medieval. D-shaped structure at cellar level, constructed of flint and mortar with occasional re-used pieces of limestone.
Small opening of brick on the north side. Straight edge of 'D' butts and overlies the off set foundation of the north transept wall. Spread of limestone chippings and dust forms possible stone masons work area.
Post medieval. Stiff clay to an average depth of 0.8m containing copious amounts of brick and tile.
Cylindrical brick soakaway with domed capping. Storm water drains run ?from the cathedral to the soakaway.
