Summary

This former carriage house in the grounds of Filby House (NHER 8654) dates to the mid 18th century and was converted at its eastern end to form a summerhouse in the early 19th century. It is brick with a thatched roof and two full-height timber double doors on its south side.

Full description

Former carriage house in grounds of Filby House (NHER 8654). Previously recorded under NHER 8654.

March 1947. Listed, Grade II.
Listing Description excerpt:
"Carriage house, converted at east end in early 19th century to form summerhouse. Carriage house mid 18th century. Brick with thatched roof. South side with two full height timber double doors and segmental pedestrian door. West gable head rebuilt 20th century. Gabled roof. North side contiguous with garden wall. Secondary 19th-century wall approaches south elevation from south separating summerhouse section from carriage yard…"

In the grounds is an excellent Gothick cottage, ruinous, which was originally an 18th century barn converted to carriage house and cottage in the early 19th century.

This is in fact an ornamented 18th-century building, the decoration on the gable facing the house is 18th century; only the summerhouse windows below are 19th. The south carriage doors are a 19th-century insertion, the original doors being to the north.
