Full description

March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks and cropmarks of a section of the Roman Pye Road (NHER 7947) to the west of Roman town of Venta Icenorum (NHER 9786) are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). See NHER 7947 discussion of the overall route of this road from Scole and the Roman town of Venta Icenorum. The route of the road is visible as a slight earthworks and parchmark, up to 11m wide, with a ditch to the eastern side. In the area of the west gate and river crossing to the town, and the juncture with the road running east from the town (NHER 52026-7), a series of sub-rectangular parchmarks and large pit-like features are visible (S3) and these may indicate structures or augmentations to the road at the entrance to the town. The line of this road continues in use as a post medieval field boundary.
S. Horlock (NMP), 25 March 2009.
