Name:Ditch and pit features associated with nearby saltworking site

Summary

In 2006 a geophysical survey detected a number of ditch and pit anomalies that are probably related to the postulated nearby medieval saltern (NHER 19694). In 2008 trial trenching in this area revealed two gullies but no archaeologicals finds. To the north medieval and post-medieval pottery as well as evidence for a timber structure was recovered (NHER 53706).

Full description

September 2006. Geophysical Survey.
Magetometry survey undertaken prior to proposed expansion of electricity substation (Area 3).
This area was found to contain ditch and pit features probably associated with the nearby postulated medieval saltern.

January 2008. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site of proposed substation extension (Area 3; Trenches 7-8).
The evaluation in this area revealed two gullies of unknown date and no archaeological artefacts. To the north of this area evidence for a medieval timber structure associated with saltworking was recovered (NHER 53706).

April-August 2009. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of new drainage dyke at southern end of field (Ditch B).
Revealed no features associated with saltworking, although dumps of burnt silt and charcoal were recorded, along with a post medieval drainage ditch.
