Full description

October-November 2005. Excavation.
Excavation on site of proposed residential development. From Context 1.
Prehistoric evidence consisted of a north-south ditch and a possible buried soil that contained worked flint and pottery.
Fragments of Roman tile and seven pieces of imbrex were recovered from medieval extraction pits and are therefore residual.
A single sherd of Early Saxon fine sandy ware and three sherds of Ipswich ware were found but were considered to be residual.
Late Saxon Thetford ware pottery was recovered from a pit and a series of make-up deposits, suggesting that the make-up layers date from the Late Saxon period.
Medieval remains comprised a domestic rubbish pit, three large extraction pits and make-up deposits.
The post medieval period was characterised by an in-filled cellar, pits and probable fence-line and make-up deposits.
Final report awaited. See assessment report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2010.294).
