Record Details

NHER Number:27857
Type of record:Monument
Name:Post medieval ditches

Summary

Several areas of linear ditch like features are visible on aerial photographs. They look much like ridge and furrow, but are actually made up of lengths of ditch. It seems possible that these features make up part of a post medieval attempt at land drainage or reclamation, although they could be of more recent origin. This area of land has been enclosed by sea defence banks since at least post medieval times.

Full description

March 2003. Norfolk NMP.
Several areas of linear ditch like features are visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1945-6 (S1 to S3) and 1952 (S4), Ordnance Survey aerial photographs from 1973 (S5 to S6) and 1994-5 (S7 to S8) and BKS images from 1988 (S9). They look much like ridge and furrow, but are actually made up of lengths of ditch. It seems possible that these features are part of a post medieval attempt at land drainage/reclamation (though they could be more recent), this is supported to an extent by the fact that this area of land has been enclosed by sea defence banks (NHER 27082) since at least post medieval times. An additional bank crosses the area (NHER 27201).
These areas of ditches combine to form two overall regions that are divided by the bank (NHER 27201). These two areas are centred on TG 0411 4482 and TG 0336 4458. The first of these areas covers about 1000m by 560m and consists of about ten to twelve smaller sub units/areas, the second area is about 850 by 590m and consists of about eight to nine sub units/areas. There are at least a further four to five patches to be seen a little to the south at TG 0392 4424, TG 0406 4437, TG 0419 4399, TG 0413 4386 and TG 0426 4427.
H. Clare (NMP), 31 March 2003.

December 2004. Norfolk Rapid Coastal Zone Archaeological Survey.
Land-based survey; Area A71, Contexts 3, 7 and 9-10:
At least 18 ditches, aligned roughly north-south.
See assessment report (S10) for further details.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.421).
A. Cattermole (NLA), 5 December 2007. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 21 July 2019.
