Full description
June 1972. Listed, Grade II.
Listing Description Excerpt:
"Believed to be 1637, date now covered. Timber framed. Two-storey and attic. Pantiles. Front with early 19th-century red brick face, coupled mutules at eaves cornice. Three windows, wood mullion casements with horizontal glazing bars, ground floor with flat arches. Doric door case with pilasters. Gable verges oversailing on hewn purlins."

The red brick wall that forms the boundary between Chapter House and the churchyard of St Mary's Church was also listed - this is now recorded separately as NHER 63227.

It is likely that the eastern end of the front range and the backhouse are the earliest parts of this building. It is possible that the house started as a post-medieval tripartite house with associated backhouse. At a later stage the present brick chimney was inserted in the backhouse. In the late 18th century or early 19th century the house was remodelled with a new roof to the west end, a heated first floor chamber and a Georganised parlour, corridor and staircase at ground floor level and a brick façade. The house is reported by Pevsner to have a date of 1637 on the outisde; this may be the date of the first remodelling and the original house may be 50 years earlier than that.
