Name:Site of Roman building and kiln and multi-period finds, Anzac Gravel Pit

Summary

Excavation, observation and metal-detecting since 1969 have revealed evidence of a Roman building and kiln. Many Roman finds have also been recovered, including coins, metalwork, pottery and tile fragments and a fine copper alloy mount depicting the head of Silenus, the companion of Bacchus. Other finds from the area are prehistoric worked and burnt flints, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age pottery fragments and an Iron Age brooch.

1969. Roman kiln site discovered.
1971. Slag found.
1973. Neolithic sherds and flint, Roman finds.
1975. Beaker, Iron Age and Roman finds.
1976-1977. Metal-detecting. Roman metalwork and coins. Roman building excavated.
1977. Roman pottery found after topsoil stripped.

1979 or before. Metal-detecting.
