Name:Site of North Star Battery

Summary

The site of North Star Battery, a fortified gun emplacement built in 1782. It later fell into disuse, but was reconstructed in 1811, and eventually equipped with 32 pounder guns. The battery was then subject to periods of disuse followed by sporadic renovation and refortification until it was demolished in 1922, the resulting rubble being used in the building of Beatty Road.

Full description

Site of North Star Battery.
Formerly believed to have been located at TG 531 091.
Recorded on Ordinance Survey County Series map of 1906 (25 inch scale) Sheet No. LXVI/15 (Survey of 1883/4 revised 1904) as being at TG 5300 0920. Copy in NAU files.

Fort was erected at time of American War of Independence, and defended by 32 pounders. See (S1).

Built 1782; dilapidated by 1811 but reconstructed on original lines and had 32 pounders by 1819. Dismounted guns 1836 and guns removed 'long before' 1851. See (S2).

In 1861 a Naval Battery was erected immediately northwest of the North Star Battery.
North Star Battery dismantled in 1898 but in use by volunteers 1903.
Naval Battery closed 1913 and Barnard Road built across its north edge.
North Star Battery was 'inactive' at this time.
