Summary

This is the moated site of the medieval Sporle Hall. A metalled road has been identified to the east of the site, with a cobbled area to the south of it. The southern and western arms of the moat survive, and archaeological investigations in 1992 recorded ditches subdividing the area inside the moat. Various fragments of medieval roof tile and post medieval brick have also been found on site.

Full description

Moated site of Sporle Hall.

R. R. Clarke (NCM) noted on 9 October 1952 a metalled road leading out to east with cobbled area to south of it, and original ditch outside modern wet ditch on west. North side destroyed by railway. In July 1953 he noted that south part of site was levelled by bulldozer. However this only refers to section outside moat, the southern arm of which remains as a long thicket. The west arm is just visible as a shallow depression between wet ditch and road. The interior is used for keeping cows and is a quagmire; heaps of earth may indicates recent disturbance.
Visited by E. Rose (NAU) 20 February 1976.
