Record Details

NHER Number:37284
Type of record:Monument
Name:Large multi-period metal object scatter and possible Early Saxon cemetery

Summary

Metal detecting from 2002-06 has recovered a huge number of metal objects from this location, dating to a variety of archaeological periods. The most noteworthy finds include an Early Saxon saucer brooch, Roman/Saxon tweezers, a Roman model axehead, a medieval enamelled horse harness pendant and an unusual ingot-like object which may have been a potter's stamp. The quantity of Saxon material, especially the brooches, has led to the suggestion that this may have been a cemetery site.
